Biography
Shawn Henry was appointed executive assistant director of the Criminal, Cyber, Response and Services Branch on September 15, 2010. In this position, he is responsible for all FBI criminal and cyber investigations worldwide, as well as international operations and critical incident response.
During his more than 22 years as a special agent in the FBI, Mr. Henry has held a wide range of operational and leadership positions. Prior to his current assignment, he was assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office, where he was responsible for the FBI’s operations in Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia.
From September 2008 to January 2010, Mr. Henry served as assistant director of the Cyber Division, with responsibility for all FBI computer intrusion investigations. He was promoted to that position after having served as deputy assistant director of the Cyber Division since 2007. For his leadership in enhancing the FBI’s cyber capabilities, he received The Presidential Rank Award for Meritorious Executive in 2009.
After playing a key role in the establishment of the National Security Branch (NSB) as a detailee to FBI Headquarters in 2005, Mr. Henry was selected as a member of the Senior Executive Service in 2006 to serve as chief of the executive staff of the NSB.
In 2004, Mr. Henry was selected as assistant special agent in charge of the Philadelphia Field Office, with oversight for special operations, technical services, and the Field Intelligence Group. Prior to that, he served as assistant inspector and team leader in the Inspection Division at FBI Headquarters, where he led teams conducting comprehensive performance evaluations and audits of FBI operations nationwide.
In addition to his other experience managing cyber investigations and programs, Mr. Henry served from 2001 to 2003 as field supervisor of the Computer Crimes Squad for the FBI’s Baltimore Field Office. He also was chief of the Computer Investigations Unit in the National Infrastructure Protection Center at FBI Headquarters from 1999 to 2001. During his tenure, he served on the U.S. delegation to the G8 as a member of the High-Tech Crimes Subgroup.
Mr. Henry began his career as a special agent with the FBI in 1989 in the Washington Metropolitan Field Office, where he investigated a variety of matters, focusing primarily on criminal matters, and was a member of the FBI SWAT team. In 1995, he was the recipient of The Director’s Award for Outstanding Criminal Investigation, and he was promoted to supervisory special agent at FBI Headquarters in 1996.
Mr. Henry earned a Bachelor of Business Administration from Hofstra University and a Master of Science in Criminal Justice Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. He is a graduate of the Homeland Security Executive Leaders Program of the Naval Postgraduate School’s Center for Homeland Defense and Security.
Mr. Henry was named as one of the most influential people in security by Security Magazine in December 2010; as cybercrime fighter of the year by McAfee Inc., in April 2010; and as one of the top industry pioneers who have shaped the information security industry by SC Magazine in November 2009.
